Everyone has a different view on this question. Some people think that “do what you love” theory isn't realistic, and getting a secure and well paying job is more important and IIT/NIT gives that, that's why it's important.
Others are of the thought that one should do something only if he/she is really passionate about it and not just because of parental/societal pressure.
I would say, you can do whatever you want to. It's your life. Do what you want to do. It's your choice. This dialogue might sound cheezy, but it is true. If you are convinced about something, you are adamant and you really want to do, just go for it. If you don't want to do it, don't do it.
You don't need to give any justification to others for your own life choices.
Take your decision. If you succeed, good. Be Proud of yourself. If you fail, then regret. And let me remind you, regretting isn't bad. It's a part of life. If you don't want to regret, it's your choice. You can always do something different and be happy.
Not getting into a certain college or school, isn't the end of the world. And working your ass off to get into a certain college, isn't foolish.

There are Advantages of getting into IIT but the Importance is exaggerated
You can get into an average engineering college, crack CAT or MAT or GMAT or GRE and have a superb post graduation with 30% pressure
You can get into an average engineering college, compete at a big event or competition and get offers that are very attractive
So whats important is BEING GOOD AT WHAT YOU DO
Whats important is understanding the concepts and able to develop on them
Ten years ago the IIT tag was far bigger than it is today
Today when you attend interviews for coding jobs, top companies dont even look at your resumes. They allow you to talk with your laptop
Today certifications are far more important than degree.
You have a PCPP 2 (Python certification), Paytm pays you 24 LPA even if you passed out from a very ordinary engineering college
You have an OCP (Oracle Certificate), you get big bucks regardless of College background
You have a CFA or CPA, you get big respect
You have a Project Management Certificate for Construction, Singapore will happily employ you without caring if you graduated from ITUS or Baba Ramdev College
The advantage with IITs are that you have more opportunities and you get early advantages , higher initial packages etc
But 5 yrs later - The playing field is level. Its all about performance, performance and performance
So IITs are advantageous and getting into them gives you early advantages but NOT IMPORTANT

Some IIT guy's go to government job's and some of them do reasearch or go to different areas, that's fine, it doens't matter as 80% of guys will still go for private job.
In 30’s when you see IIT guys earning in lakhs and getting good girl for marriage and you see your pathetic life, you understand why you should have worked hard in school.
Its a slap on my face, my life, Now I realize what IIT could have done for me, All i had to do was dedicate 10–12 hrs. during 15–17 yrs of age, what was my age, there was no burden, now I see the way career has shaped, If I was in IIT, it would have been different career journey.
I am feeling like that in life now, when I look at IIT placements and 21 yrs young guys getting salaries in 20–30 lakhs per annum, what the fuck is going on in India.
Life in India has no value because we are in Billions this has led to a society where some people will get privileges and others nothing but struggling life.
IIT gives you a way into that privileged living.
Because you need to survive and earn good amount of money while getting good girl for marriage and having a decent life before going to god.
In India, Going to IIT gives you that, it's bulshit that your talent is enough no no no IIT tag helps you a lot in having decent life while you see your fellow Indians doing menial jobs.
Be practical, No indian family will give beautiful girl to a struggler, IIT TAG AND a good job will make sure doesn't matter what your looks are, you get good girl.

Unless you are Marwari or Baniya or landlord with existing family business or huge agricultural land, then as average Indian then you need to get a job.
We are producing babies in crores every year who will need to become employable in next 20 yrs, India is not a economic superpower like US and China to generate jobs for lots of people with respect to their population.
We have very less jobs and every Indian is fighting with another Indian to get a job from toilet cleaner to other skilled jobs.
ITs a war and its a matter of shame if you are not getting job by 21.
Indian democracy has completely failed to provide quality of life to her people in last 70 yrs and here people are even ready to work for free if that is going to give them experience.
AT lower level and mid-level, its a world war 2 type of situation where UP and Bihari's are competing with other Indians to get jobs, every Indian is fighting for survival here.
So after college pass out, Lot of Indians go and beg to companies to recruit them via exams and off campus recruitment.

if you slog hard in your 12th class and get a seat in IIT which is very difficult to get in by the way, then once you are in and you perform well in degree there, Companies make a beeline to hire you.
Yes you still need to pass their exams and interviews but at this level, You will have lot of companies who would like to recruit you.
ITs complete change compared to normal colleges, Imagine Google and Microsoft coming to campus and offering 18 - 20 lacs per year salaries to students and some lucky people who go to USA even in crores.
You see life becomes easy for IITians compared to normal college pass outs, now suddenly you are Rockstar in your society because you are earning in lakhs per month while your other society friends from normal college are only getting 3–4 lacs per year or are still searching for jobs.
Now suddenly Girls find you attractive for marriages because you can give them better life style who would not care and give you even glimpse when you are slogging hard for IIT’s, some of the handsome ones are exception here.
Most of companies Indians higher up management are full of IIT/IIM graduates, getting a IIT with IIM degree is a sure shot formula to go into executive roles in any Indian or MNC Indian operations center.
India’s life is difficult for average guy because at lower level it is too much fight and competition and he cant clear IIT or IIM entrance exams.
Hence ITs very important to get into IIT for any Indian who wants an successful corporate life in India and a gateway to going to US And doing post grad or post doctorate from IVY league colleges.

I am not counting getting beautiful girls for marriage proposals and buying a good flat and good car while your normal average Indians are slogging hard to get more experience with less salaries.
I have seen first hand IIT grads who are paid more than 6–7 yrs experienced guys from normal colleges in the same company and all I can say with realistic experience is companies are hungry for IIT graduates who can join them and they pay them handsomely.
For your marriage with beautiful girl, for first home purchase with less EMI’s and for first car with top model and high paying jobs, Getting into IIT is important.
I regret not going into IIT and I have seen relatives who went to IIT are earning more than me and
All I had to do was slog hard in 12th class time and get a seat into IIT, at 16–17 yrs, you don't have maturity and awareness of how world will look like for you if you don't work hard.
Nowadays for normal college guys there is a second way, that is to pursue MS in USA and then get a job there on H1B and OPT but not every Indian graduate will go to USA, only some of them can go and afford it while others need to stay in India.
Indian parents are right, fucking study hard in school, if you want good life for next 80 yrs, you are average and focus on hard work, study hard in 12th class, get into IIT, I promise when you turn 26, you will be having good monthly salary while your normal college friend's would be earning 4–5 times less than you and you will enjoy life like anything.
In next 15 yrs, you are looking at director level job while your non iit friend's can dream of that.

Money is everything in India, in every fucking conversation from neighbor to relative's, only one thing how much your son is earning and what job he is doing?
Be realistic, college is just 4–5 yrs well life is till 100, your degree matters in the end.
What I am saying is practical, if anyone tells you that by learning Udemy or becoming expert by self study then yes you can be expert but how many of normal people try to do that. 1 in thousand and then what work in some unknown small company or startup as company wants experienced people.
So for any Indian- Shortcut to Success- Study in IIT- Work Hard, get Top Grades and see for yourself, you will need not to struggle like your normal college friends need to.
IF you fail to do so, no issues, its fine not everyone gets in IIT but be prepared for normal salaries, lot of competition and maybe after 6–7 yrs you may get reasonable salaries.

You are getting good salary, at the same time, you are getting chance to learn new technologies/skills, what better life it would be than this?
So if you are over 25,then ignore this answer and whatever life you have, you can go to IIM for one more shot if you work hard.
Else if you are in 10th class or 12th class, Guys Please work hard, put your all efforts in clearing IIT exam, Future is bright and you will have shortcut to job with good salary and a great life in india ahead.
Marriage/Job/Home all these are important later in life and an IIT passout placed in good company or even government job will have better chance on all of this.

你有很好的薪水，同時(shí)，你有機(jī)會(huì)學(xué)習(xí)新的技術(shù)/技能，還有比這更好的生活嗎？

Getting into IIT is important bcoz its the only exam for engineering aspirants which determine their “intelligence/hard work”at that level.There is no other parameter to judge.
Tag of IIT gives you a stamp that you are intelligent at that level.
No doubt that tag helps you throughout at various levels-directly or indirectly in getting jobs etc. It also gives you a sense of proud that you are studying in topmost engineering college of India.

So now you get int them or not is how you prepare and score in entrance tests.
BUT
It makes sense to prepare for those tests and give your best; after all having ambitions to get into best school and competing with brightest minds will Develop yourself as well

Going into IIT is dream of all students. Its India’s premium institute that everyone want to get into it. To get into IIT there are two main exams.
IIT JEE is one of the toughest exam to clear. There are three main subject in it physics mathematics and chemistry. you have to score cut off marks to get in IIT.
Post graduates should also can go into IIT by giving GATE exam.

I could not get into IIT, nor into any engg college. But I am very much satisfied with what the God gave me.
all cannot get into IIT or other engg colleges, so please don't make this as an issue. Do what you are capable of doing and excel in it.

It is not that much important. There are lot of universities with the same quality but with lower cost. There is no point of paying higher amount for the same quality. There are some great state universities also which are offering great knowledge.
Therefore, don’t waste your money for IIT, look for another options also. If there is no possibility to join any other institute, IIT could be considered as last option.

這沒(méi)有那么重要。有很多大學(xué)有同樣的質(zhì)量，但成本更低。為同樣的質(zhì)量支付更高的價(jià)格是沒(méi)有意義的。也有一些很棒的州立大學(xué)，提供很棒的教學(xué)知識(shí)。
