Japan opposition lawmaker Shinji Oguma of the Constitutional Democratic Party voiced sharp criticism of Trump tariffs, warning against capitulation to what he referred to as 'American extortion.' "I hope that you will never give in to the American extortionists," he said. Meanwhile, Japan’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Takeshi Iwaya, called for a diplomatic approach to the evolving US trade policy, warning that 'tariffs are changing like a daily menu' and creating deep uncertainty, speaking during a parliamentary session in Tokyo on Wednesday.

Dealing with Trump is like giving an arsonist a box of matches in a fireworks factory and telling him not to use them. International trade relies on consistency, Trump is far from that and his word is most definitely not his bond.. Thank you Japan for telling it like it is.....

How very right ! To give money to the extotionist would not only encourage him to come back for more, but, also endanger others who are smaller and more vulnerable. Can you imagine if China or Japan gives in to this tactic, how will the rest of the world be able to withstand it.

Very well said. Lucid, accurate and reasonable comments from the speaker. US opposition parties, the “free press” and reasonable countries around the world should take note and not be bullied by the insanity of this current US administration - which is clearly out of control and beyond parody

US Military in Japan : Critics advocating withdrawal of US military bases should note Japan is the #1 top financial contributor to the US among 166 host nations, paying over USD 1.4 billion annually directly to the US and an additional USD 2 billion annual for land, labor, and utilities - totaling USD 3.4 billion yearly paid to the US. In return, the US gains strategic advantages , including deterrence of regional threats against the US , US ’s global military reach, US intelligence/surveillance, US defense/force readiness, alliance assurance, and US logistics hubs in Asia.
Japanese Cars in the US : Claims of Japanese automakers being unfair, such claims ignore that Japanese automakers employ 34,000+ American workers across 6 US states - and is the #1 top foreign automaker that employ the most American workers - triple the workforce of the next-largest foreign automaker with plants in the US. Japanese automakers’ dominance stemmed from pioneering fuel - efficient ( less smog for Americans ), reliable vehicles via lean manufacturing (continuous quality control) versus US automakers’ error-prone end-of-line inspections (e.g., Ford Pinto flaws). US automakers’ struggles (e.g., GM/Chrysler bankruptcies, Navistar strikes) were driven by rigid unx contracts inflating costs , not Japanese competition. Non-unx foreign plants outperformed unxized US automakers.

Let Japan be an example of those who caved before US tariff war. In1985 when Japan's economy were booming at its peak, the US made Japan sign the Plaza Accord that forced Japan to 1) move their auto factories to the US. 2) Disclose their core technology to the US or just handing over their patents 3) Otherwise face a full-blown tariff sanction. The US did this because they thought Japan was earning too much from them and they wouldn't have it. Japan caved without a fight. And the American factories of Toyota, Honda, etc are a result of that. Today, the new American President completely forgot what Japan did for the US, and still firmly believes that Japan owes them, that Japan ripped them off, that Japan should right its wrongs.
That's what the US does to its allies who didnt retaliate. It doesn't matter evern if you give the US everything you have. The US can still believe that they are the victim, and you are the perpetrator.
