I've not been to Chongqing but I have been to Beijing and Guangzhou and can't think of a global city where I've felt more safe. The only reason to feel unsafe in Chinese cities is someone walking into you while gawping at their phone.

China is safe, no question about it. Meanwhile in US there's one recent police bodycam video where a cop rolled up to a couple who were hugging in the park to make sure they remember that they don't live in a totalitarian hellhole but in the land of the free, and so naturally the park has a curfew. And if they just so happen to be there after dark then they will be fined. In the end the cop returned some time after, the couple was still there and so the cop fined a guy but the girl started to act up, refused to sign the ticket, so she was handcuffed and sent to jail.
