Canadian here.
Health care isn't free, anywhere. We pay for everyone's coverage premiums via our tax system. And what we pay to cover everyone, is about half per capita than the US pays, leaving millions of Americans uncovered.
Canada is a world-leader in medical research and delivery that provide better results than our southern neighbour in all metrics.
We are covered cradle to grave, no medical bankruptcies, no exclusions, no pre-approvals, no death panels, no dealing with parasitic insurance companies or adjusters.
So way better, for less money.
Just like every other developed country, except the USA.

First, where do you get the idea that Canadian healthcare is of lower quality than American healthcare, Fox???? Yeah, probably, as only a Fox / MAGA viewer would say something as ignorant as that. Just try being poor in the US versus poor in Canada. Trump has just this week taken away medicaid from the most vulnerable people - guess you voted for that, right? america is the only country in the developed world where life expectancy is falling! Great heah?
Is Canadian healthcare free? No. We pay for it out of taxation, the same way Americans pay for their military. Our taxes save lives, your taxes kill people.

Health care isn’t free but is is cheaper because it is payed through our taxes and spread out over the whole population. Health care is not of lower quality, the outcomes are often superior to American outcomes. You should never think that because health care in the US is more expensive that it must be better. In the US health care is big business out to make money for its share holders.. Insurance companies do not want to insure people with medical conditions, people in dangerous jobs or the elderly. They want young healthy people only. When a young healthy person develops a serious illness the insurance company or course has to pay the bill but will do everything in their power to cancel that insurance as soon as the opportunity arises. Hospitals are built and run to make profits. Canadian health care offers more preventative care than American insurance plans. There are waiting periods for surgeries like knee replacement, hip replacement and cataract surgeries. There are some Americans that like to say people die waiting for surgery in Canada. That may have some partial truth. Generally the people who need knee replacements, hip replacements or cataract surgery are older people with other medical issues. These people may die waiting for a knee replacement but it is not their bad knee that they died from.

There is NO free healthcare systems anywhere. All Canadians pay toward the cost through taxes instead of at time of service.
Canadian healthcare is of high quality. Patients and medical staff come from all over the world to be treated and to learn and contribute in Canada.
All Canadians benefit. We are healthier, live longer, and not one person has gone bankrupt as a result of medical costs.
Canadian citizens, those with Permanent Residency, and refugees are covered. Medical care is never connected to employment.
Healthy Canadians work more and pay more taxes.
I think you have been lied to.

Neither statement is accurate.
First, no healthcare system is “free.” There’s no such thing. Anywhere. What you’re actually talking about is universal healthcare, which is usually pre-paid (usually through taxes, depending on the country).
Canadian healthcare costs less than American healthcare because their system isn’t dominated by a largely unregulated private insurance industry that takes 10s of billions for itself that does not go to healthcare.
And Canadian healthcare is a higher quality than American, which is indicated by their medical data like lifetime expectancies. In fact compared to all nations in the developed world, US medical outcomes rank the lowest. That is because every single developed nation on earth has universal healthcare, with the sole exception of the US.
So it’s not just Canada. Every developed nation with universal healthcare—which again is all of them except the US—have less expensive healthcare systems than the US and also produces better general medical results than the American system does.
You are caught in a little bubble of lies and misinformation. Time to wake up?

About five weeks ago, I noticed a strange lump on my throat. After about a month, I noticed it wasn’t going away, so I went to see my doctor. He was quite concerned and ordered bloodwork and an ultrasound. I got the results about a day after the tests: NOT cancer, just a cyst. My doctor has reached out to a surgeon to have it removed, and I expect to hear from the surgeon’s office sometime in the coming week to set up a consult for surgery. None of this has cost me a dime, and it’s all been a pretty speedy process so far.

Small upxe, MAY 31 2025: I have an appointment with a surgeon on July 09 to see about, well, surgery. And again, this won’t cost me anything ($50 if I were to cancel the appointment last minute), but other than that possibility, zilch, zero, nada. There’s even free parking in front of his office.

Canadian healthcare is not free. We pay for it with our taxes; that way everyone is covered whether they could afford it or not. And we don’t have lower quality; some of the world’s cutting edge research in serious diseases and conditions are done in Canada. Many American doctors have actually moved to Canada to work. When the government funds everything, there are no “special interests” to hamper treatment, diagnosis, or pharmaceuticals.

Considering that we live longer than Yanks, more of our kids live to grow up than Yanks and more of our mothers survive childbirth than Yanks, as a start I’d say that overall we do much better than Americans who pay more for less healthcare.

What do you mean “isn't free?” Of course it is. You may have to pay for dental and some prescxtions but that is true for any country with universal Healthcare.
It is better because it saves the average person about $2500 to $3500 per year, and the increase in taxes for the same income is probably less than $1,000. Why is it better? Well, there are no bankruptcies for the inability to cover a $100,000 surgery, people are healthier because they are diagnosed sooner and treated sooner for the 25 chronic diseases that kill 70% mainly bec!use Americans cannot afford treatment (even if they are insured). So, there is the quality of life and longer life. Also, lower infant mortality because women do not avoid prenatal care. Also, even insured Americans are more likely to die awaiting surgery because of three weeks to see a specialist and three weeks to see the referred surgeon, and two to three weeks to schedule surgery, that is nine weeks mimimum assuming you call a specialist first. No one waits more than three to five weeks for heart, kidney, liver, or brain surgery in Canada.

Well there is of course a small matter of the fact that it doesn't have “a lower quality”. Indeed Canadians tend to live on average about 5 years longer than Americans and we have a far lower rate of infant mortality. Canadians are also more healthy than Americans in general.

Because there are no insurance companies extracting profits from the system, more money is available for actual care. And because here in the US insurance companies have a financial incentive to deny care, many Americans don’t get the care they need until it’s too late. And because the threat of medical bankruptcy hangs over the uninsured and under-insured, people forgo essential care. All these reasons contribute to worse health outcomes for Americans than for Canadians, or citizens of France or the UK or Japan or New Zealand or Spain or… pick any industrialized country other than the US.

Canadian healthcare is funded through federal and provincial taxes. So we pay a little more in income and sales tax in exchange for universal coverage for everyone. It’s not free, we pay more for fuel, heating, alcohol, cigarettes, but if you get sick you get to keep your house, car, all your stuff. Somethings still cost out of pocket, drugs, dental, braces, wheelchairs, chiropractors, etc. But most people have employee health plans to help with the extras. We pay per person half of what the same care costs in the US. And we have better life expectancy, lower infant mortality, and better disease outcomes. You do have to wait for some things that aren’t urgent. If you have a true emergency things move just as fast as in the US. As a citizen of the largest economy in the world, how is this not a basic right?

Probably for the Basic Medical Care and Emergency Room visits, the Canadian Healthcare System is superior to the US Healthcare System - and you know you won’t go broke from wildly overinflated Medical and Insurance Bills and Pharmaceutical Costs.
Where the Canadian Healthcare System gets the majority of it’s criticism, is in the Long Wait Times for serious Surgeries and Appointments with Specialist Doctors.
That may be why many Canadians will also pay for a Private Medical Insurance Policy, which has faster Medical Service - OR they travel to the US for Surgeries.

The high net worth may pay more than 13.95% of what they spend in a year, but people with that many resources in any country can do that if they desire.

As A Canadian who lived in the USA from 2001 to 2010 I can tell you the quality is just as good. The biggest issue we have is that outside of the major cities, we have a shortage of doctors because doctors seem to prefer to live in the cities. The USA has this same problem. Hence wait times are longer for non-emergency procedures in the smaller communities or the people have to travel to the cities for more prompt treatment.
When this writer lived in California, with HMO level insurance I can tell you with the exception of Kaiser-Permanente, Canadian medical services are better. Not as good as PPO insurance but better than the HMO coverage most Americans have.
The exception was Kaiser-Permanente who is a little bit better than in Canada, at least in the big cities.

It isn't free but costs half what the US system does. Who says it is low quality your right wing nut job news outlets that makes up its own reality and never uses facts.
In every single ranking I could located and there are many independent studies that have been done Canada always ranks higher quality than the US
So Canada has higher quality care, they have a longer lifespan that is increasing, and their system costs half what the US systems per person.
So why do you feel the US system is better it is the most expensive system in the world double off every other country. It ranaks last in all developed countries and even some third world countries have better quality.
Life spans are decreasing which means we are ding earlier and earlier most all other countries are living longer and longer.
So the US pays double, is going to die earlier, and has the worst care out of the most developed countries in the world.
So why does your right wing nut job news outlets provide you those facts?

Canada has a excellent health care program!! It beats the USA 100%! We are a extreme ignorant nation when it comes to health care!! The American people are fine with pharmaceutical companies lining the pockets of Congress and Senate,, screwing over us citizens every day!!! Money talks and Big Business Walks!!

The Canadian health care is funded by taxes people pay. When a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident receive service from doctors and hospitals the charges are billed to the Government.
Your statement about Canadian medical care is of a lower quality is far from the truth. Canada provide one of the best medical care to it’s people.
