On Monday, the government was concerned enough to hold a “war game”, led by Lammy, in which departments played out the possibility of a massive Israeli attack on Iran. Military personnel are understood to have taken part. A military source said the primary concern in London was for the safety of British citizens currently in Tehran, and British citizens in Israel. There are also fears that British shipping could be targeted by the Iran-backed Houthi rebel group in Yemen.

Unreliable partner!
let's remember Israel sold weapons to Argentina at the height of the Falklands War in 1982, - declassified Foreign Office files.

And UK army officers trained and served in Jordanian military units when they were fighting Israel in the 50s, kicked Israel out of the Chieftan tank program in the late 60s .
Plus given the current policies towards Israel I'm surprised that people consider this news .

Israel got it's independence via a campaign of terrorism against the British Empire, there's a reason the partition was left to a UN with no ability to enforce it.
Straight after independence they were non-aligned and diplomatically closer to the USSR than the west, whereas Jordan has been a western ally for the entirety of its existence.

Given the political problems it would have caused the goverment if they had known in advance I suspect they will have been pretty damn pleased not to be informed.

Given that the Prince of Wales CSG and Carl J. Vinson CSG are both fresh in the region and “coincidentally” moved away from the Red Sea towards the Persian Gulf/West Indian Ocean after the Houthi ceasefire in May, my guess is both the U.S. and UK were informed and the UK is playing dumb for domestic political purposes. The U.S. initially denied via Marco Rubio but then Trump posted on social media about knowing all along.
Or it is just a wild series of happenstance that the world’s largest concentration of 5th generation naval fighter jets just happen to be in the area surrounded by air defense ships with full magazines and fresh crews.

This was in the strikes months ago. No evidence of UK involvement this time. Still a possibility though.

We shouldn't have got involved then and I sincerely hope we don't get involved now. Israel can fight its own battles. We never get a scintilla of gratitude or benefit from helping those people anyway.
Corvid187
Eh, getting involved then minimised the potential collateral impact of the strikes, allowing both sides to deescalate having 'got their hit in'. It was less a favour to Israel and more to reduce the risk of a larger entanglement later. From a purely self-serving perspective it made sense then, but now the escalation is probably too far to wind in, so stay out would be our best bet.
cennep44
Maybe. I can see the reasoning for intervening then, although you could also argue that it just emboldens Israel if they think they will always be bailed out by the US / UK / France, and not have to face the consequences of their own actions. Well Iran has just directly stated that if we shoot down Iranian missiles then Iran will attack UK forces. So this all has the capacity to get completely out of control very quickly.
Corvid187
I think in this case both parties are too committed now for our intervention to be able to meaningfully deescalate things at this point. Israel can't afford to stop now it has an opportunity to disrupt Iran's nuclear program, and Iran can't afford to seem impotent in response to Israel's attacks.
That being said, I am personally skeptical of how credible Iran's threats actually are in this context. They already have their hands full with Israel as is. Escalating to attacking the UK in response to us providing what would amount to relatively insignificant defensive support would add massively to their problems in return for very little. I think us intervening is a bid idea, but more on its own merits, rather than because of the threat of Iranian retaliation.

Israel are not allies of the UK. They are at best strategic partners.
If Netanyahu wants to accuse our PM of "emboldening Hamas and being on the wrong side of humanity" then he can go fuck himself TBH.
This point should transcend domestic politics. As much as I *despise* Trump I accept that the alliance with the US is more enduring and so I wouldn't support Starmer using language of this strength against Trump - at least whilst they're both in their respective office at least.
Israel have repeatedly shown themselves to be untrustworthy and hopefully moves like this will further ram home the message that they are not our friends and haven't been for a long time.

It honestly seems insane that Netanyahu is so quick to burn goodwill and political capital while also starting wars with pretty much every single country in a 1000 km radius. I get that Israel is militarily powerful but this seems dangerously overconfident, you can't survive in a world in which you have alienated literally everyone. I guess right now they still have the US who are pretty much ride or die but that's about it, they're a having no real allies and a ton of enemies.
Wgh555
It is insane. They might be very rich but for all their presence on the world stage, they’re less than 10 million people. Iran alone is nearly 90 million. Without western support, not sure how long they’d last tbh.
SimoneNonvelodico
I suppose they always have the nuclear threat but that makes it even scarier because while that's power, it's not world ending power in their case, so the deterrence is limited. If a sufficiently determined coalition of enemies decided they could suffer one or two nuclear strikes in exchange for getting to invade them, it would be one of the bloodiest and most horrible wars ever, and the second nuclear war after WW2, but it wouldn't be unthinkable for someone to go through with it either. Their game theory isn't the same as it was for the Cold War NATO vs Warsaw Pact stalemate, and that's even assuming Iran does not have nuclear weapons and Russia does not in any way put its finger on the scales.
pixelface01
Iran getting nuclear weapons is definitely not a good idea , the Saudis will want them what then, does Isreal bomb Saudi I would argue that the current Israeli government isn’t fit to have them either or a reliable partner it’s fairly safe to assume the attacks are as much about regime change as they are about stopping Iran gaining viable nuclear weapons, and that could go very badly ask the Americans, now I get that Israeli policy is to have an unstable Middle East the weaker the less western facing states the better for Israeli security no matter how many Arab lives are lost , it doesn’t help that the Palestinian leadership is equally as bad a sane leadership would have a Palestinian state years ago ,Israel doesn’t have a legal leg to stand on regarding the occupied territories it would have have become the new South Africa ,Isreal is a state propped up by western money ,and western public opinion will win out in the end.

Good.
I'd like to be very unreliable in this conflict as I don't want our country to have anything to do with the GENOCIDE that Israel is perpetuating.
I suspect this news piece came out because the UK embarrassed the USA and toddler Trump by being deeply involved in the Ukrainian attack on Russia's air fields without telling them because they are the unreliable partner.
Silly_Triker
This likely isn’t true. There’s a lot going on in the background and the UK government is pretty committed to Zionism, but is aware that the public is less and less committed to it. So it becomes buried further and further into the background. We are likely providing passive and active support for Israel in numerous ways that won’t come to light until much later.

Feels like we had it forced upon us all along, and hopefully that will soon change.
