It’s bad, no doubt. But the US isn’t going to lose its place as the most influential country on earth. It’s still our world if we want it to be. It’s not “quickly” losing its influence. It’s currently *slowly* losing its influence in some areas, but not all. (Our global share of GDP is higher now than it was a decade ago, for example) I’ll also point out that our relatively unique federalist structure means that we aren’t giving up on the opportunity. It’s just moving to the states and private sector, where it’s still going to forge ahead, albeit much slower and weaker. So we aren’t “ceding the biggest economic opportunities to China”. We’re ceding them to the states and private sector. It’s not a good thing, but it’s not as gloomy as your post says it is. And this will all get reversed again in 4 years at the federal level. The net loss will not be 4 years of loss; it’ll be less. The US can afford to make stupid a few decisions for now. It can’t afford to sustain them, but it won’t have to. Congress is at its craziest level right now. It’ll start to come back to normal after next year’s election, and by the time the map gets reshuffled in 2032 following the 2030 census, Republicans will be forced back to the middle. In the context of “this century” (which was stated in the OP) the US will still be 95%+ renewables by 2050. It’s simply too cheap to switch to renewables. The private sector will make the change even if the government doesn’t.
