The Chinese carmaker registered more pure electric cars than Tesla in Europe for the first time in April. Tesla just about remained the biggest seller of EVs globally in 2024.
Tesla has since been hit by a backlash over Musk’s role in Donald Trump’s administration. Registrations for new Teslas in Europe halved in April compared with the same month a year earlier. Musk remains the world’s richest man, worth more than $400bn (£295bn), according to Forbes.
Electric cars are already much cheaper to own than their petrol equivalents for most people, but the arrival of smaller models with a comparable sticker price to fossil fuel cars is seen as important in persuading lower-income buyers.

Analysts suggest that BYD has a lot of room to cut the price of the Dolphin Surf further. The company sells a near-identical model under the Seagull name in China for about £6,000, although Chinese safety regulations are significantly less onerous.

In contrast, the UK has not added tariffs on Chinese electric cars, and has therefore been the biggest target market for Chinese brands. BYD sells through a network of dealerships across Britain.
The UK accounted for 30% of all Chinese electric models sold in Europe in March, according to Matthias Schmidt, an electric vehicle analyst, with brands like Xpeng, Leapmotor and Jaecoo, owned by state-controlled Chery also trying to win market share.
Schmidt has cautioned against writing off European carmakers, which already have several smaller cars on sale, and more on the way. The cheapest electric car on sale in the UK is the Dacia Spring, which costs £14,995, although its official range is only 140 miles. The Citro?n ?-C3 starts at £18,305, while Renault’s well-received 5 model starts at £22,995.
The Dolphin Surf has an official range of up to 137 miles, but also has some features that are generally found on more expensive models, such as a rotating touchscreen and driver assistance functions like intelligent cruise control and automatic emergency braking.

While carmakers in Europe have until now mostly focused on NMC batteries to help assuage range anxiety among early adopters, LFP batteries have proved to be hugely popular among Chinese buyers looking for a cheaper upfront cost. More than 80% of electric cars sold in China in 2024 used LFP batteries, according to data cited by Kallanish Commodities, an industry news provider.
BYD’s main Chinese battery rival, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Limited (Catl), has also invested heavily in LFP technology in the race to dominate the global electric vehicle industry. Both companies are also competing to offer full recharging in minutes.

The Chinese manufacturer BYD has launched its cheapest model in the UK, in the latest stage of its efforts to overtake Tesla as the world’s biggest electric carmaker.
But can they stop the owner from doing Hitler salutes? That is the crux of the matter.

There are several metrics (admittedly overlapping);
Don't be the worst on safety standards, and you'll be beating Tesla.
Don't be the worst on customer satisfaction, and you'll be beating Tesla.
Interestingly, you could manufacture a car that's the cheapest EV you can buy and has a commensurate build quality, and still have a good chance at beating Tesla on that metric as well.
有幾個(gè)指標(biāo)(不可否認(rèn)是重疊的);

The UK used car market is among the best in the world. You can get a shit ton of car for less than £15k with better features and reliability than the base spec new cars that people are financing.
And pre-owned EV’s are proving to be reliable. People are still stuck in a mindset from 10yrs ago that EV batteries will be degraded heavily after 10yrs. It’s a myth. You can get a decent used Tesla Model 3 for less than £15k. I don’t even like Tesla’s that much but for that money it’s quite hard to ignore.

Problem is the small chance that you do need to change the batteries it will cost you £10k to £20k. its a huge amount and theres no way to repair them like you can with parts of a combustion engine.
Plus Tesla used to be be ranked very low for reliability so you definitely wouldn't want an older model. No major issues with batteries, but everything else.

Yeah there is the chance of complete battery failure but I wouldn’t say it happens often enough that it needs to be a concern. Some EVs like the Nissan Leaf have modules in the battery that can be replaced instead of the whole battery. I doubt you can do this for higher end EV batteries though.
And yeah Tesla’s were built like shite. It’s the main reason I don’t like them.

Module replacement on Leads still cost thousands, much more than they are worth as a vehicle, also replacing modules doesn't guarantee the battery will function as before, you'll likely still experience sudden power drop. They're wonderful vehicles but criminally awful batteries.

I've had my car 20 years, from new, paid cash, no reason to change or upgrade. Getting on in years myself so I don't know if I'll ever go electric.
Anyway, I've been saying for a while, someone needs to produce the EV equivalent to the mini in the 60s. Low cost, no frills, gets people started. Yes the battery will be the most expensive part but do we really need 20 cameras and connection to an ap on our phones to control the a/c?
I haven't looked at the BYD range or prices but maybe they can tick enough boxes to become the new mini.

They’re being subsidised by the Chinese government to be able to overproduce and under price cars specifically with the goal of dominating the market by undercutting western competition in ways they’re unable to compete with. Amnesty recently did a report on car manufacturers and found that BYD effectively is akin to slavery at its factories. They’re suing people who post negative opinions.
Other manufacturers are unable to produce cars this cheap because of the unethical practices and tremendous initial losses it would require.

Shipping and VAT. Also BYD wants to make a profit abroad. All EVs are cheaper in China so they can't compete without also being cheap.

They’re being subsidised by the Chinese government
The same as all car manufacturers then. The same as most companies then.
Subsidies discourse is really really stupid. the welfare state is a state-wide subsidy to businesses, but nobody would consider it so.
Current eu tariffs on Chinese EVs massively overestimate the level of subsidies, because they don't have to be accurate and it's mostly political in nature.
Even with those excessive tariffs..... they still make a huge profit. Welcoime to efficient supply chains and vertical integration. Welcome to a mature EV market that's been subject to extreme competition for years.

Seeing a lot of "I'm not buying Chinese" here. Do you folks realise that China mines about 90% of all the rare earth materials used in the manufacture of electric motors on the entire planet? What this means is that even if you were to buy a completely British electric car (not that they exist) you will still be using Chinese materials. That's not even mentioning battery manufacturing.
Beer-MilkshakesBlack Country
The vast majority of semiconductors came from China up to 3 years ago. COVID changed that a bit but everyone was happy to buy electronics from China and stuff in their cars on the assembly line.

Ok but China isn't the only place these materials can be sourced. Buy from somewhere that doesn't source from China.
It's 90% because people buy from there.
Buy from somewhere else and it won't be.
Come on, don't be so defeatist in your thinking!

BYD will get bigger. All their shit is in house, meaning very little sourcing apart from some leather for the seats of certain models. Profits will be huge. They will be the main player in a few countries soon. Mark my words.

It's amusing how this comes up in my Reddit feed directly after footage of a bridge collapse in Guizhou.
londons_explorerLondon
That bridge will be rebuilt before the UK government gets round to doing a consultation on what to do about the results on the last consultation about what colour wheelie bins should be in 2029.
I prefer 'gets shit done' government over paralyzed by incompetence government.

But I have been told that CHINA BAD and therefore we should not buy their EVs. I mean, they are better quality, cheaper, and more reliable than most other EVs. But, you know, China.
Broccoli--Enthusiast
The reason they are cheaper is the reason they are bad
Slave labour and selling at losses to undercut the markets. They will kill all competition then send prices to the moon, standard tactic, hopefully they go bust first.
KingCOVID_19
Cars are built by robots these days, dude. Have you ever seen what a production line looks like?
Having slave labour in a mass production car factory would literally be too inefficient.
Hour-Alternative-625
China covered their entire country in high speed rail in the same time that it took this shit hole to even get half of a single line done. Hilarious to read these completely braindead takes about China, propaganda really does work very well.
